Knocked out tooth step by step instructions to save it before you reach the dentist blog

There is no denying that experiencing a knocked-out tooth can be a frightening experience, regardless of how it happens. But while you may be overwhelmed initially, knowing what to do and acting quickly can make all the difference when it comes to saving your tooth.

Follow these step-by-step instructions before you reach the dentist.

Step 1: Take a Deep Breath and Find the Tooth

Once the tooth is knocked out, stay calm and locate it. When you do, carefully pick it up by the crown only. This is the area of the tooth that is usually visible above the gums. The reason this is so important is that the root part of the tooth has very delicate cells that are essential for reattachment.

Is the tooth dirty? If so, gently rinse it with milk or clean water. Do not scrub it or use soap.

Step 2: Try to Reinsert the Tooth

If the knocked-out tooth is permanent and you feel comfortable doing so, gently place the tooth back into the socket facing the right direction. Once it is in place, you can softly bite down on a clean piece of gauze or cloth to hold the tooth in place. Doing this is the best way to preserve it until you can see the dentist.

Important note: If a child loses a primary or baby tooth, do not attempt to reinsert it.

Step 3: Keep the Tooth Moist

If you are unable to place the tooth back into the socket, you will need to find a different way to keep it moist. This is critical for saving the natural tooth, as you never want it to dry out. Of course, you do not just want to use any type of liquid. Here are a few of the most ideal options:

  • Milk
  • Saline solution
  • Saliva

Try to avoid storing the tooth in plain water.

Step 4: Contact Our Office Immediately

Remember, a knocked-out permanent tooth is a dental emergency in Boulder. And time is of the essence. Treatment should ideally begin within 30 to 60 minutes of the injury. However, even if more time has passed, it is still important to seek emergency dental care as quickly as possible.

When you call our office, we will provide you with further instructions. Don’t delay!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a knocked-out permanent tooth really be saved?

Yes. If the tooth is handled properly and treated with urgency, the chances of successful reattachment are much higher.

What should I do if the tooth is dirty?

Hold the tooth by the crown and gently rinse it with milk or clean water for just a few seconds. Do not scrub it or touch any other area.

Should I put a knocked-out tooth in water?

You will want to keep the tooth moist, but not by using water. Either reinsert the tooth into the empty socket or store it in milk, saline solution, or saliva.

What if my child knocks out a baby tooth?

Do not attempt to put the baby tooth back in the socket. Contact us right away so we can evaluate the injury and discuss the next steps.

How can I prevent a knocked-out tooth?

While you cannot always prevent a knocked-out tooth, you can take steps to reduce risk. Wear a custom mouthguard while playing sports, practice good safety habits, and maintain regular dental visits.
